A school has several departments, there is the management, the teachers and the students. These are some of the important pillars that complete a school. Learning Beam’s goal was to recreate an online school from scratch to overcome the difficulties caused by the pandemic situation.
Magnet’s challenge was to find the best online method for students to learn and appear for exams digitally. We also had to consider the diverse behaviour of the different roles that would be using the platform – students, teachers, parents and management. The second challenge was to be appealing enough for new users – students and parents to take admission into Learning Beam Academy and to make sure that the admission process was short and quick.
We collaborated with Learning Beam Academy(LBA) to help them design a platform that transforms the way students learn, teachers teach and parents monitor grades. The LBA team assisted us in understanding the domain, user groups, needs, pain points and walked us through their admission process, teaching process and parent-teacher meetings. We noted the needs, goals and pain points for each user group. With all this information we moved to the next step to draft a solution.
Our task was to build an online school management portal where parents can enrol their students in several academic courses. Parents can track progress their child is making and teachers can connect with parents and students to give feedback and grades. The management can overlook the whole process to track the efficiency and performance of students and teachers. User flow diagrams were shared with the client to propose a solution. Flows were created for each role – Student, Teacher, Parent, Admin, Landing page
While designing we had to create the perfect balance between bright and attractive colours, illustrations for young kids and very formal design for teachers and the management team. Choosing the right colour scheme and design language was essential. This application also had many graphs to show attendance, performance and grade reports which had to be extremely simple for different user groups to understand.
On the student dashboard, we placed a section to show upcoming events and tasks right on the top. This was done to ensure that students always met the deadlines for tasks and were prepared for the exams beforehand.
We designed the admission form into 3 steps – 1) Select a course 2) Create a profile 3) Payment. We only took details that were necessary and kept them clean and tidy. Users could complete the form within 90 secs and hence our goal of achieving a quick admission process was accomplished.
LBA’s method of teaching students was by providing them with E-books on that particular subject. These E-books had detailed information about the topic and all this information had to be organised in a way that was easy for the student to understand and further keep a track of learning progress. The quiz section had 2 types – 1) Subjective and 2) Objective and these quizzes were time-based. After submission of these quizzes, the teacher would be notified to review them. This is how the students got grades based on their performance.
The teacher can check the quizzes and assignments and provide grades/comments. They can also check the grade report of students.
The function of the calendar was to inform the viewer about the upcoming tasks and events. The students could log their tasks here, we also added a functionality where they could set up a discussion call with the teachers. The teachers had additional functionalities of adding a remark, scheduling meetings with students and parents and creating tasks and quizzes for students.
